Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
For about the last 200 years, parents were told that they should lay their babies facing down just in case if baby was sick they would not choke on their vomit. There is no sure way to prevent sudden death Syndrome, but there are some steps you can take in the care for your baby which really help.  Since the early 1980’s when parents were given new advice to put their baby to sleep on their backs there has been a huge reduction in the rate of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). In the UK alone between 1981 and 1992 the reductions was 90%
            An American study of all SIDS cases showed 21% were attributable to maternal smoking whilst among smokers, 61% of SIDS cases were attributable to maternal smoking. Maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with a significantly increased risk of SIDS. There is even a relationship between maternal smoking and changes in the brainstem of the infant. Other factors were late or no pre-natal care, low pregnancy weight gain, the mum’s age being under 20 at first pregnancy, alcohol and substance abuse and sexually transmitted diseases.

Never let your baby get hot, use light weight blankets make sure the room is well ventilated.

Never allow your child to be exposed to cigarette smoke either before or after birth.

Teething is a very common problem that newly born baby's have in the course of them getting their first set of knashers. And it can be very frustrating for the parents and the baby. as there is really not a lot you can do to help them. Symptoms to look for if you suspect, As the that little tooth starts to break the surface of the gum causing pain and sometimes a temperature they become fussy they may get Diarrhoea but this has nothing to do with their teeth, baby's are always putting things in their mouths and some time that thing he just put in his mouth was not very clean, and this is what will cause the upset tummy, so no worry there, ether about the runs or the dirty object they just chewed.( Research is showing we are too clean these days and baby's don't eat enough dirt, which dilutes modern baby's immune system, but that's a story for another day.) Check them for pulling at their ears pain in the gums especially the back molars can travel up the cheeks to the ears. A Teething baby will bite and gnaw on anything it can get in their mouths the pressure of doing this helps to relieve the pain, and if he or she is a drooler the constant saliva will give them a rash on their chin .Sleeping problems as the pain wakes them up. Some time they get like cold symptoms like coughing and runny nose. There is no set pattern for this condition all baby's are affected differently and some are lucky, some not so lucky. What you can do: There are a few things you can try Teething rings that you fill with water and keep in fridge so when needed it is nice and cold. A cold bottle of water or cold food often helps. If your child is definitely suffering from teething pains, then the recommended dose of Calpol or Infant Tylenol or you can get a teething gel that can help. Lots of love and hugs, talking to other mums will give you tips to try. But you should always check with your paediatrician before you try anything you read including this article. I mean what planet are these people on.The Primary Review, based at the University of Cambridge, said children's reading skills had hardly benefited at all from the Government's £500million National Literacy Strategy.
Children were stressed about their tests and losing their love of books in the drive to improve literacy, the researchers warned.
Mick Brookes, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, said parents had a "responsibility" to help children learn to love books.
He said it was time to review the Government's "imposed" reading strategies that hamper progress and undermine children's pleasure of reading.
A good start would be the re-introduction of quiet reading time into the school day, he said.
Parents have a real responsibility here to ensure that there are good books in the home and that the bedtime story for younger children is seen as an essential part of quality time.
His comments followed a call from Children's Secretary Ed Balls last week for parents to spend 10 minutes a day reading to their children.
The Primary Review warned that reading standards had barely improved since the 1950s.
The researchers called for a major overhaul of the primary school testing regime amid warnings the current system could be giving up to a third of children the wrong grades.

And this just found on the net. 5th January 2008. it was revealed that Zenna Atkins, now chair of the schools inspection authority Ofsted, 'couldn't read the back of a cornflake packet's instructions', at age 11.
